Arlene Rutkowski Obituary

Arlene Feldscher Rutkowski was born February 8,1947 to Howard Feldscher and Helen (Wierzgacz) Feldscher in Bayonne, New Jersey.

Married to the late Edward (Tex) Rutkowski, and Mother of Craig.

She went to our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and St. Anthony High School where she was the manager of the girls’ basketball team.

She then, went on to Jersey City State College now New Jersey City University and received a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. She returned to college and received a certification as teacher of the handicapped. She taught in the Jersey City school system for 38 years at P.S. #15 and #34.

Arlene wrote and piloted the first all day kindergarten program in the early 1980's and was head teacher at the E.D.P.C. in the trailers at P.S. 34. That program was expanded to become the all- day pre-k's and kindergartens in Jersey City.

She was the mentor for many student teachers and was an adjunct professor at NJCU for a special program where students were assigned to multiple grades in the school and all their classes were held at the same school.

She was listed in 1984-84 edition of Who's Who Among American Teachers. She was awarded “Teacher of the Year” from P.S. 34 in 2005. Arlene retired in 2006.

Arlene, her husband, and the Jersey City Police Department ran an annual fishing outing day for over 26 years for Hudson Milestones.

She was chairman of the board of directors at Hudson Milestones from 2012 -2014. She was the recipient of the La Greca Award for volunteer service in 2014.

Arlene was reappointed she as chairman of the board for Hudson Milestones from 2020 to 2023. She received The Nat Amadaeo Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Seniors (now West Side Seniors) and

was the events coordinator for the group. Arlene especially liked going down to the shore home, planning family gatherings like the “Great Crab Feast,” as well as the casinos at Atlantic city and Bethlehem. Friendships were important to her, and she enjoyed the company of all those that kept in touch.

Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home; .

Mass Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum.
