Henry Sanchez, 88, passed away on Wednesday September 2, 2015 at the Center For Hope in Scotch Plains. He was born in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and resided in Bayonne for most of his life. Henry was 17 years old during WWII when as a U.S. Navy Signalman he landed on Omaha Beach in a landing ship tank with the allied forces in Normandy France during D-Day. He received the Normandy France Medal in 1996 and the Navy Combat Action Ribbon in 2000. After the war he worked in the old Brooklyn Navy Yards then was transferred to the Military Ocean Terminal in Bayonne. There he worked as a firefighter and transportation specialist for the Water Port Logistics Eastern Seaboard Command. His career at the MOTBY lasted for 51 years before it closed in 1997. He was a commander for the DAV and twice for the American Legion F.A. Mackenzie Post # 165, Bayonne. He was a trustee for the Bayonne Veterans Relief Fund, member of the VFW Post #226 and was active with it's museum and he was affiliated with the Korean War Veterans. He sat on the board of directors for the Hudson County United Way, the BLRA and Pamparo Bank. He served on the committee for the Tear Drop Memorial at the former MOTBY. He was also a local TV announcer for the Bayonne Memorial Day Parade and the Hispanic Heritage Parade. He received the U.S. Air Force Meritorious Civilian Service Medal. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Nee: Krzykowski) Sanchez. Brother of the late William and Nestor Sanchez. Loving father of Henry Sanchez Jr. (Laura), James Sanchez (Judith), Jane Serafin and Michele Bulger. Dear grandfather of Danielle, Kristina, Richard, Lindsay, Brittany, Courtney, Lisa, Doreen, Tracy, Michelle and Rose. Also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday fro 4;00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the S. Fryczynski & Son Funeral Home, Bayonne. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Bayonne. He will be interred with his father and brothers in the Puerto Rico National Cemetery. © 2015 Microsoft
