John J. Varnak “Johnnie Wernoch,” 87, passed away at home with his loving family by his side on Saturday, April 11, 2015. John was born in Bayonne and was a lifelong resident. He served his country proudly as a member of the Merchant Marine during WWII and was discharged from the United States Coast Guard. He was a checker for the International Longshoreman’s Association at Port Newark. He was a member of AMMV - NJ, Dennis A. Roland chapter, the American Veterans, the American Polish Veterans and the American Bowling Association. He was an avid bowler in his day and once rolled a perfect 300 game in league play. He enjoyed crabbing and will be remembered for all his old salt of the sea stories and countless words of wisdom.
John was predeceased by his siblings; Leo and Peter Wernoch, Agnes Maciag, Ann Golias and Adele Cichetti. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years Ann (Nee: Kudryk) Varnak. Loving father of Donna Varnak, Kathleen Varnak, Deborah Loving and Carol Stickler. Dear grandfather of Tiffany, Abby, Matthew Jr., Taylor and John. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the S. Fryczynski & Son Funeral Home, 32-34 East 22nd Street, Bayonne, (201) 339-1692 (www.fryczynskifuneralhome.com). A Funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bayonne. Committal services with Military Honors will follow at Rosehill Crematory, Linden, N.J.
