Joseph Cheshul
Joseph Cheshul, 86, lifelong
resident of Bayonne, passed
away on Tuesday, January
11, 2011, at the Bayonne
Medical Center.
He was a retired Captain from the
Bayonne Fire Department, where he
worked for 24 years.
During his high school years he was a 3-
letterman in baseball, football and basketball.
He served his country in the Navy during WWII. He joined
the Navy boxing team during the war while serving on the
carrier the USS Ranger.
When he returned from military service in 1946, he entered
the fight game - first as an amateur, where he achieved great
success capturing the N.J. Golden Gloves Heavyweight Title;
later as a professional fighter - his record was 26 wins and
only 5 losses.
At the height of his career in 1949 he fought the great Joe
Louis in a 10 round bout before 5000 fans at the Newark
Armory.
Joe was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame
in 1990. He also played football for the N.J. Pro’s in the New
Jersey professional football league, was inducted to the
Bayonne Brotherhood Softball league hall of fame and was a
member of the Knights of Columbus Star of the Sea Council
#371, Bayonne.
He is predeceased by his brothers, Edward and Walter
Cheshul.
Joseph is the beloved husband of 60 years to Eleanor (Dulko)
Cheshul; loving father of Paul and his wife Liz, Joseph Jr. and
Deborah Kevlin and her husband Michael; dear grandfather
of Laura, Thomas, Michael, Alexandra and Jate; cherished
brother of Loretta Kushnir; and also survived by his sistersin-
law, Ann and Clare Cheshul.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Viewing on
Sunday, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Monday morning, from 9:30
a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the S. Fryczynski & Son Funeral Home,
Bayonne.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Bayonne. Cremation will be
private.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Jude
Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis,
Tennessee 38148-0142.
