Mary Mathews (Nee: Skirka) passed away peacefully at home after a short illness on Monday, June 24, 2024 with her sons by her side. She was 92 years of age. Born in Bayonne, she attended Woodrow Wilson School and was a 1950 graduate of Bayonne High School. Bayonne has always been her home.
Survivors are her sons Andrew Jr. of Bayonne and Peter (Patty) of Oceanside, Ca. She leaves one sister Nancy Reynolds of Herndon, Va. Also surviving is a step-grandson Lars (Theresa) Kromann of Copenhagen, Denmark and their children Albert, Liva and Hector. Mary leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years Andrew Sr. in 2008, her parents Mary and Michael Skirka Sr. and a brother Michael Jr. and sister Anne Heinbokel.
Mary was retired from Transceiver East Inc. of New York City where she was employed as a bookkeeper. During her career she was also employed by The Macmillan Co. and Clinton Swan Clothes also of N.Y.C. in the same capacity. Upon her retirement she became a volunteer at H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. and did so for nine years. Mary had many joys in her life time. Foremost was the love she held for family and friends followed closely by her many years of travel. She discovered line-dancing late in life and it gave her a great deal of pleasure. She enjoyed her outings into N.Y.C. where she shopped and never missed an opportunity to take in foreign film or to avail herself of all that the city had to offer. She was an avid reader and a sports enthusiast, baseball and tennis being primary. She was a member of the Andreans and the Rosary Society of St. Mary/St. Andrew. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 28, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Mary RC Church, Bayonne. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery, Linden.
