Mary T. Puciul, born in Bayonne on May 16, 1920 passed away at her home on Avenue A with her loving children at her side. She was a Bayonne girl at heart living all of her niney-one years on the same block in town. After the John Bailey School around the corner, she attended Bayonne High School. Her yearbook picture contains the apt poesy: ”Mary with her lovely smile / Makes us feel that Life’s worthwhile.” A warm and engaging person, she had a natural knack for making everyone feel welcome and at home. She was known for her beauty and for her lovely telephone voice which was first cultivated during her years with Bell Telephone after high school. It was these qualities along with her impeccable sense of style that landed her the job of main receptionist at the F.I. Dupont’s offices in the Empire State Building for twenty years. Mary happened to be working that day in the 1950’s when an airplane crashed into the building during which she maintained her signature cool. But for her entire life, she refused to counter the principles of nature by stepping into an airplane at any time.
In May of 1950 she married the love of her life, Walter A. Puciul. They were a mutually adoring couple raising four children together while Walter commuted to his office in the financial district in New York. Walter was also a professional photographer and Mary was one of his favorite subjects. She was first and foremost a caregiver to her children and her invalid mother who lived with the young family for seven years. In 1990, she and Walter built a house together on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts to be closer to two of their daughters and their growing families. But Bayonne’s hometown draw was strong for Mary and she moved back in 1994 after her beloved husband’s passing. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren in town while continuing to visit her family on the island in summer.
She will be deeply missed by her four children: Carol Page of Bayonne, Susan Puciul of Chilmark, Massachusetts, Stan Puciul of Yonkers NY and Barbara Puciul Hoy of Cambridge and West Tisbury, Massachusetts. Also surviving her are her seven grandchildren: Maria, Ruby, Claire, Nathan, Jack, Isaac and Bo.
Viewing will be held on Wednesday from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the S. Fryczynski Funeral Home, Bayonne. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of mount Carmel Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
