Matthew P. Wernock, age 77, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2018. He was the loving husband of Janice and proud father of Michele, Lisa, Gregory, Jennifer and Jeffrey. He was also blessed with 7 grandchildren, Angelo, Domineco and Salvatore DiSalvo, Katherine and Alexandra Hobbs, Gabriela and Taylor Onelli.
His engineering degree from NJIT led him to a long career at NJ Bell/ Verizon as the manager of the Subway Division. In his life he touched many people through the organizations he was a part of. He started out of college serving as the President of the Alumni Board of Trustees at NJIT. As a Rotarian, he served as President and received the Rotarian of the Year Award. He counseled young adults in Junior Achievement. His greatest commitment was to Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Boy Scout Troop 19, serving as Troop Committee Chairman, mentoring many scouts through their achievement of the rank of Eagle Scout. Twice he led a team of scouts on a high adventure trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Matt earned the Bronze Pelican, Silver Beaver and Boy Scout District Award of Merit.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Gathering to share memories and celebrate his life on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the S. Fryczynski & Son Funeral Home, Bayonne. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Thursday, May 3rd at 11:00 a.m. from the Parish of St. John Paul II at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. There will be NO Visitation on Thursday morning, please go directly to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree in his memory.
