Stanley Magda Obituary

Stanley S. Magda

October 15, 1939 – July 13, 2024

Stanley S. Magda, 84, a lifelong Bayonne resident, passed away peacefully at his home – surrounded by all of his “treasures” – on Saturday, July 13, 2024.

Stanley was born to parents Walter and Anna Catherine (Skowronski) Magda on October 15, 1939. He grew up the eighth of eleven siblings (seven older and three younger). Legend has it that Stanley wanted a pet when he was a young boy but one of his older brothers told him, “We don’t need a pet, we have you; we’ll call you ‘Butch.’” From then on, he was affectionately known in the family as “Butch” or “Uncle Butchie” to his nieces and nephews.

Stanley attended Bayonne High School, graduating from there with the Class of 1957. After high school, Stanley apprenticed as a barber and attended barber school, obtaining his barber’s license in 1960. He was then enlisted into the US Army, serving his country first in Colorado at Fort Carson then in France during the Cold War in Europe in the summer of 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis in the fall of 1962. He was honorably discharged in the winter of 1962. When he returned home to the United States, he married his childhood sweetheart, Patricia A. Borden, in August 1963, and together they raised two sons, Stanley (born in 1964) and Charles (born in 1965).

Stanley opened his business, Stan’s Barbershop, on Broadway in Bayonne around 1963 or 1964. Here he earned the moniker “Stan the Barber” from his many customers, friends, and neighbors alike. Stanley purchased the building of his barbershop in 1991 and remained actively in business at this same location all the way until his recent passing.

Among Stanley’s many hobbies were woodworking, including handcrafting everything from napkin holders to furniture, and stained-glass artistry, including custom-made window and door panels, and Tiffany-style lampshades and chandeliers. He also enjoyed hunting for bargains at various flea markets around the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. His favorite vacation spot was Las Vegas, Nevada, where he loved to try his luck on the slot machines. He also had a voracious sweet tooth!

Stanley is survived by his devoted son Stanley M. Magda and daughter-in-law Andrea G. Magda, his loving companion of 16 years, Dolores Paszek Rivera, his brothers Edward Magda, and Vincent Magda (and his wife, Janet), his sisters Anna Fedorochko and Pauline Drennen, and many nieces, nephews, and their respective families. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia A. Magda, his son, Charles S. Magda, his dear parents, Walter and Anna Magda, his brothers Walter, Thomas, Chester, and Steven Magda, and his sisters Lottie Silveria and Mary Hudacko.

Visitation will be held at S. Fryczynski and Son Funeral Home, 32-34 East 22nd Street, Bayonne, NJ on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.
