Fryczynski & Son Funeral Home, Bayonne Stephanie Frances Matkowski (nee Baszczewski), formerly of Bayonne, passed away peacefully on June 6 after a brief illness. Born in Bayonne on May 30, 1917, God blessed her with an amazing run, allowing her to live on this earth and witness many things for 98 years! She was a lifelong resident of Bayonne until moving to Clifton to reside with her daughter in September 2014. She graduated from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Grammar School, skipping the 5th grade. Having left High School after her junior year to help her family financially, she completed her senior year by attending night school at Bayonne High. She later took courses at night in a business school at Journal Square for shorthand and typing where she excelled. She was employed by the Maidenform and later by the International Nickel Company (INCO) where she worked until she started her family. She loved her family, friends, neighbors, Bayonne, the Shop Rite, walking on Broadway, Atlantic City, her faith and her country. She took great pride in her Polish heritage. She is now and forever in the company of her parents, Frank and Felicia (nee Wal) Baszczewski, loving husband, Theodore (Ted), her siblings Helen Safaryn, Emily Kozak, John Basz and Stanley Baszczewski, their spouses, and her niece, Dr. Claire Smith (nee Safaryn) of Chicago. She is survived by her daughter, Linda, to whom she was a devoted Mother and friend. She along with other relatives and friends, are left to lovingly cherish her memory.
