In Memoriam: Stephen M. Stets (August 21, 1954 - August 23, 2023)
Stephen M. Stets passed away on August 23, 2023, at the age of 69, born on August 21, 1954 to his late parents Louise Chernesky and Michael Stets.
He is predeceased by his sister Judith M. Sellaro and daughter Yolanda Stets. Stephen is survived by his son, Stephen M. Stets Jr., his brother Michael Stets, Michael’s wife Josephine and niece Maryann.
Stephen's commitment to public service was exemplified by his 30-year tenure as a Jersey City police officer, from December 17, 1979 to August 1, 2010. He also proudly served in the United States Army, achieving the rank of First Sergeant. His military service spanned from April 21, 1972 to August 21, 2014, reflecting his deep sense of duty to his country.
Stephen was a dedicated member of Peninsula Lodge #99 Free and Accepted Masons, where he served as the Master of the Lodge. He was Assistant Secretary to the Grandmaster and also held the esteemed position of R.W. Grand Chaplain for the state of New Jersey, embodying the Masonic values of brotherhood and service. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and served as a Shepherd for the Shriners further demonstrating his commitment to the Masonic fraternity.
An avid hunter who embarked on three African safaris, Stephen had a passion for the great outdoors. Bowling was another one of his favorite pastimes.
Stephen was a friend, mentor and brother to all who knew him.
Stephen's wide circle of friends enriched his life, and he always held them close. His best friend/brother Nicholas Puja provided Stephen with unwavering support throughout his journey, especially during his most challenging times.
But perhaps the greatest source of strength, light and support in Stephen's life was the love of his life, affectionately known as his "Sunshine." Their bond was an inspiration to all who knew them.
In addition to his human companions, Stephen's feline friend, Loca brought joy and companionship into his life.
